  1. According to present knowledge comets are leftover material from the formation 
  2. of the solar system, which were blown to the system's outer edge by solar wind. 
  3. There this leftover material condensed in the bigger bodies ('clouds'). Most of 
  4. them drifted to paths that took them out of the solar system. Still, at least a 
  5. billion comets are there still in a very susceptible gravitational state. Even 
  6. the slightest influence from an external gravitational field will cause some of 
  7. the comets to start moving and later to become visible comets with shorter 
  8. periods.
  9. During its infancy, the Earth was hit by many comets. In fact, the water on 
  10. Earth originates from comets. Later, the impacts became more and more rare, and 
  11. it has been calculated that though new comets are discovered at a rate of 12 a 
  12. year (however, SOHO has discovered more than 60 new comets), the Earth is hit by 
  13. a comet only every 3 million years.
